Disastrous Beauty Regimes

There comes a time in a ladies life when she realises that her biological clock is ticking and certain things may start heading 'south' pretty soon as well as get wrinkly in certain places. Well, that was how I've been feeling these past few weeks. I resolved to myself to stop being more of an 'I dont care' person and take better care of my self and my 'bits' so that when I hit my 'forties' and above, I'd give the teenager a run for their money and pass for twenty years younger.

So off I went to the shops to get some bodycare products. I got some Foaming Facial Cleanser, Apricot Scrub, Hydra + Cleanser, soft peeling gentle exfoliating cream bar and daily Facials lathering clothes with a firm resolve not to forget to use them daily. Yes I confess I am not really a girly girl and on past occassions, such items have remained in my cupboard for months without remembering to use them. From now on, it would be different I told myself.

The reason why I am telling this story is that just 2 days after I had started making good use of the above items, my entire face - specifically my cheeks and chin have broken out in scales. My cheeks are 'burnt' and terribly rough and no matter how much cream I apply, the cream soon dries up and the scales and rough burnt patches appear more vividly. The problem is I dont even know exactly which of the items mentioned above is the culprit for this misfeasance. So much for trying to look twenty years younger and being a girly girl. Its turned out to be a BEAUTY DISASTER! I will now have to get a really good moisturizer and hope the scales will go away ASAP, then try to work out which of them caused it so I can stop using it and continue with the beauty regime with the rest.

My ticker hasnt moved ever since its first slide on the 13th of April cos my weight hasnt gone past what you see above for the past 7 weeks. But my diet buddies have encouraged me that I may be loosing inches even though the weight isnt really faling off drastically yet and indeed I have discovered this to be true. There's this pin striped jacket that I loved so much but had to move it to the bottom of my wardrobe cos my arms were too fat and strained against the fabric quite obviously making wearing it anymore an impossibility. Even trying to wear the Jacket with a sleeveless top didnt resolve my dilema - my arms still wouldnt go through the sleeves of the jacket. Well, I am happy to announce that this jacket has been resurrected once again as it seems I have lost several inches in certain places as well as some flab off my arms. I wore the jacket on sunday to a christening and there was so much flab gone from my arms that I even wore a fitted long sleeved shirt beneath the jacket. (This is a jacket I couldnt even wear with a sleeveless top or shirt previously) HOORAY!!!

So to keep up this flab burning regime, I have taken up running. I found a running partner on GUMTREE or she found me rather and we've been running together at least 3 times a week. Our stamina and endurance is improving and we have both graduated from barely being able to run a 2 minutes stretch without collapsing to running for about 10 minutes or more non stop although I must confess that sometimes, there are days that our bodies scream out horribly in pain. Inspired by the FIT ladies, Buki whose fitness diary I have been following keenly for the past year as well as her running partner Vickii, I've also registered for three 5KM races - Women London Run, Race for Life in July, the Hydro Active Race as well as the 8 KM R4W Race in September too. So this summer, I wont be cheering them -Vickii and Buki as well as other runners on from my sofa but will be participating in the races myself! I have declared WAR on that remaining 15KG. It must drop off by hook or crook. LOL!!

  2. Way to go girl... Don't worry.. It may not look like you've lost anything on the scales, but keep working at it... it will pay off in the end... Nice for you in the resurrected jacket tale!

As per your face, what could it be??? Take it easy o!@ Maybe you should stop everything altogether and start using them 1 by 1 to elimiate the product that;s bad for you? or see a dermatologist... Anyway, good luck...

  3. Sorry about the beauty products... I have always been scared of them. I use Dove soap for my face only.

Maybe you should just stop using all of them... if you can't figure out which one's the culprit.

You registered for those races? Well done!!!! :-) Don't think I heard about that 1st July 5k race... interesting... Might sign up for that to prepare me for my 10k the week after... I have 2 other races in July o, LOL!

    Keep it up CG :-)

  4. Sorry to hear about your face. I feel your pain.
Once I used raw honey on my face cuz a friend told me honey was good for the face, but alas it was not good for mine. I had horrible rashes on my face for weeks! I had to stop using anything on it till the rashes cleared out...and of cuz u can bet that honey and my face can never be friends- EVER.

I hope your face gets better. Also all the best with the "runnings" :)

  5. The face thingy can be very tricke calabar gal. I used to know w gal that was applying facial creams. In the first week, it kinda 'wrinkled' her face. The beautician asked her to continue and she did. 3 weeks later, her face was as smooth as a new born baby's bottom and slightly fairer. I think you should ask a skin expert or something.

Good thing you're taking da weight thingy seriously. Ehen, keep reminding yur sis not to step down her own weight wars ooo...lol!

All da best of the week!

  9. Calabar girl, you might be exfoliating too much. Unless you have very oily skin you should only be exfoliating 3 or so times a week. I would recommend you cut out the apricot scrub (which IMHO is too harsh for your face anyways) and see how your face reacts. And I'd also recommend Clinique products, if you want something more gentle for your (seemingly sensistive) skin.

Good luck on the weight thing, my motto is prayer + determination x action = success. Yes I pray and it works

  10. You may be allergic to salicylic acid which is common in facial product. First you have to determine your skin type, if you are not oily (you only talk about "wrinkly" which is more common for dry skin)you really don't need all the stuff you bought. Invest in a good night cream (I'm really oily so wrinkles haven't caught up with me yet so I cannot really recommend one cos I don't use any) if wrinkly is your problem cos they tend to be a little oily and moisturize your face. For now, back off on all the new products, get a moisturizing cream e.g dramatically different lotion for your face.
Last thing, whatever you do, make sure your morning routine includes something with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or more
Okay! thats my spiel ... just the pharmacist in me :) :)

  23. Calabar girl, don't worry, the kilos will drop off, but again, I have to say that you should include weights, any progress in that department? you might also have to raise the bar higher, run further or faster, normally, the body gets used to the exercise and that is why you have hit a "stop"(they have a name for this in "exercise world",just can't remember it now). Try to increase something, that usually helps. Well done oh! keep up the good work!

  24. Thank You everyone, I have taken note of all your beauty tips and advice.

@Waffarian: I am running further than I used to. Our new route is now 6km instead of 4-5km. It is the faster bit that is a bit cumbersome. Will get there eventually.

@Mrs Somebody and Ubong Da: As usual, the two of you are clowning. You're both welcome anytime. (Literally) LOL!!

I would suggest asking someone at the beauty shop before you commence on all these beauty products...LOL. You are probably using the wrong things for your skin type...

  27. CG- what do you mean by crook? (smile). I would throw out all of your concoctions your skin is probably great just the way it is. It seems that your skin is very sensitive so I would advise you to use a hypoallergenic skin cream. Preferably Aveeno for babies or Johnson and Jonson just a light moisturizer. For cleansing you can use a glycerine soap like Pears soap.

By the way when do I receive my check? Please make it payable to "DR. SIMPLY GORGEOUS".

  28. The scales will go. Don't try and wash or scrub it off. It's the dead skin that's peeling off naturally. That happen to me too. Use Mary Kay if you can, the whole line. It's a great investment for yourself especially the eye firming cream and microdembrasion set. Don't get discourage with what happened, take a break and try your beauty regime again. You won't regret with Mary Kay. Holla.

  31. Well..to share my little secret.I used to develop pimples every time i'm about to go on this period thing. And then a colleague of mine told me to try using lemon.Ever since then i don't get those. This is what i did.

    -Bought a lemon fruit.
-Pricked the pimples first, then washed my face with the water oozed from the fruit.
-It'll be itchy at first but with time ur face will get used to that.
-The let the fruitwater dry into your face.
-Wash face again with lemon bathing soap.
    -Dry with towel.
    -Apply lemon face wash.
-Stay for 5 minutes then wash off.
    -Towel dry.
-The apply lemon face cream-do this morning and night.

I used to hate doing all this stuff, but ever since i started using these lemon products, people say that i look 19!

  32. I've been stalking your blog for a while now but only felt the need to comment because you talked about running - yes, you guessed it; I'm a running fanatic.

Stick with it and before long you'll be boring everybody with tales of how you can't get through the day without your daily run.

A word of advice though: make sure you wear appropriate running shoes which you can get from running shops. It makes a huge difference, trust me. Also, check out www.runnersworld.co.uk.

    Welcome to runner's world.

Take a hot shower, use baby powder containing aloe and vitamin D on ur face, skin and sleep. Does wonders in the morning. I and all my girlfriends sleep with out face white like a ghost. Morning, feels fresh and younger. That's my one secret for you. Try it.

  39. Awww sorry about your skin. I think each product might be good on it's own, but you have to find what works for you and what doesn't. Stop using all of them together and see a dermatologist. Or you could just pop into your department store and get some over-the-counter advice from the ladies at the skincare desks. Try the Clinique counter at Boots or Debenhams, the ladies there know their stuff. All the best with your running!

Am in the same boat with you as per the weight dropping off on the scale but am still encouraged by the fact that am beginning to wear some clothes i had given up on. Sorry about ur face, i swear on Neutrogena facial soap and Skin Success face cleanser, maybe you can try that.
