|Dr Emmanuel and Mrs Antan Edet|
Ofonime Sunday Inuk is the Chief Witness in the case against a Consultant Gynaecologist - Dr Emmanuel Edet and his wife Mrs Antan Edet a senior nurse. Dr Edet and his wife are charged with cruelty to a person under 16, slavery, holding a man against his will for 24 years and assisting unlawful immigration. It is believed that Ofonime was handed over to the couple when he was 12 years old by his parents. He lived with the couple in Israel and them moved with them from Israel to the UK when he was 14 years old. He was included on their passport when they moved to the UK.
Speaking from behind the screen at Harrow Crown Court while giving his evidence, Ofonime said he worked as a slave in the couple's home in Perivale for up to 17 hours a day. He cooked, cleaned and took care of the couple's children. He went to the police in 2014 when the couple went on holiday to Nigeria.
The couple deny keeping him as a slave and could serve up to 14 years in prison if found guilty. The case continues.......
Why did this couple not attempt to regularise Ofonime's papers while he lived with them? Why was he denied an education while he lived with them? Primary Education was still free the last time I checked. Ofonime has been living with them from 1989 to 2014 when he went to the police. 24 years in a land where education costs nothing, absolutely nothing! This is a case of man's inhumanity and injustice to one another but I wont be quick to judge until I hear what they have to say in their defence.
