Bloggers Be Warned! Publish False Stories For Monetary Gains & Face The Wrath Of The Law!

Lady Justice

The Law says that every person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.  There has been a rise in bloggers requesting for money from people they are about to write stories about.  The get rich quick or die trying syndrome is for real!

The modus operandi is that the bloggers cook up a story, then call their victim to inform him of the story they are about to publish.  The victim is then offerred a chance to prevent the story from being published by paying a specified amount of money.

Of course anything on the internet flies and once it is out there is difficult to retrieve so the victim has to think about his or her reputation - either stand strong and face the music or pay up and avoid the brohahaha that comes with being the trending topic of the day.

I have seen a situation first hand where a politician was called by a blogger that he had a story to publish (a cooked up story which was entirely false) and requested for N250,000 to stop the post from being published.  The politician called his bluff and asked him to go ahead and publish.

Desmond Ike Chima
This same accusation is being levelled against another blogger - Desmond Ike Chima, publisher at myemag.net and enigeria.com by United Bank For Africa (UBA) Managing Director (MD)  Phillips
Ozolua.

UBA Chairman - Phillip Ozolua

Desmond was arraigned at Igbosere Magistrate Court on Friday 18th October 2015 on 5 counts of felony.  According to the prosecuting counsel, Desmond wrote a malicious article alleging that the Bank MD was having an affair with actress Genevive Nnaji.  The aim of the article was to blackmail Ozolua and extort money from him to kill the story.

The headline of the story read: "Randy UBA PLC MD, PHILLIPS OZOLUA'S WIFE TO DIVORCE HIM OVER AFFAIR WITH ACTRESS GENEVIVE NNAJI"

Desmond Chima  was arrested by the Nigerian Police following a petition by Mr Ozolua.  He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded in custody until 30th October 2015.

Did he actually publish the article and was it a falsehood?  The case is sub judice  and we shall see what happens or is proven in court.

ALL YE BLOGGERS  THAT ENGAGE IN EXTORTION UNDER THE GUISE OF BLOGGING - BEWARE!!
