The Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) has confirmed the nomination of Cross River State born Supreme Court Judge - Hon Justice Walter Nkanu Onnoghen as next Chief Justice of Nigeria. Justice Onnoghen is the most senior Supreme Court Judge and will succeed the current Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) - Hon Justice Mahmud Mohammed who will retire on 10 November 2016 when he attains the mandatory retirement age of 70 years.
The FJSC will forward the nomination to the Federal Judicial Council (FRC) which will in turn forward the nomination to President Buhari for appointment as the CJN. Justice Onnoghen is from Cross River State and will be the 17th CJN if his appointment is approved by President Buhari and the Senate. He will be the 1st Southern CJN in 29 years - the last southern CJN being Justice Ayo Irifeke who retired as CJN in 1987. If appointed, Justice Onnoghen will retire on December 20, 2020 when he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 70.
